For a relatively small city (population 68,000), Asheville and the quaint surrounding towns offer many unique shops, boutiques, and world famous cuisine. For those who need something from the mainstream world, Asheville boasts two malls and several shopping areas with almost every franchise change store available.

Festivals

Almost every town, city, and hamlet in the area holds a festival of one sort or another. Most revolve around the rich mountain heritage of the region. Twelve months out of the year, you will be hard pressed not to find a craft, music or arts festival going on somewhere within an hour’s drive.

Some of the larger local events:

Bele Chere is the largest free street festival in the Southeast. Music on twelve stages, Arts, Crafts, food and fun the last weekend of July.

LEAF (Lake Eden Arts Festival) is a spirited celebration of regional and world folk arts. Includes music, dancing, concerts, handcrafts and healing arts.

Shindig on the Green Gather on Saturday nights during July and August for bluegrass on stage and in informal jam sessions under the trees in downtown Asheville. A genuine glimpse into the traditions of Appalachia.

Mountain Dance and Folk Festival Since 1928, mountain fiddlers, banjo pickers, dulcimer sweepers, dancers, balladeers and others join together on the first weekend in August in downtown Asheville.
